20 Grams of Protein or 20 Percent? Understanding Pack Numbers

20 Grams of Protein or 20 Percent? Understanding Pack Numbers
A front-of-pack number such as 20 is incomplete without its unit and basis. Is it grams, a percentage, or a figure for the whole pack?

Identify the unit
Grams express an amount. Percentages require a denominator. A %DV figure is a proportion of a daily reference value, not grams of protein or an individual requirement. For other percentage claims, check how the manufacturer defines them.

Check the serving basis
Record whether protein grams apply to one serving or the entire pack. A fictional pack containing two servings with 8 grams each provides 16 grams in the whole pack. This is a calculation example, not a store product claim.

Compare equivalent amounts
When serving weights differ, use the same comparison basis. Calculate protein in the amount actually eaten rather than applying a per-100-gram figure to a smaller bar.

Read the rest of the label
Review energy, carbohydrate, sweeteners and allergens. A protein claim does not determine portion size or suitability for every age and goal.

Ask a clear question
How many grams are in the quantity I plan to serve? Request a readable label when the unit or serving is unclear. Keep the flavour and pack size with the label photograph.
